BMW Says Recalls Minis, X5
Tue Jul 30,12:14 PM ET
FRANKFURT (Reuters) -
German luxury carmaker BMW AG said
Tuesday it was recalling nearly a half its new Mini models and
around a third of its X5 sports utility vehicles from world
markets.
BMW said it would recall 38,700 new Mini models and 56,000
of its X5 vehicles at a cost of $6.22 million, which would be
covered by provisions.
The company said it was investigating possible problems in
the Mini linked to the cable connecting the shift lever to the
transmission and loose brake pedals in the X5.
A spokesman said the possible defects did not put safety at
risk.
At 11:55 a.m. EDT, BMW shares were down 1.2 percent to
39.55 euros compared with a 0.3 percent rise on the Dow Jones
European Auto Index.
Earlier, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (

recalled from the U.S.
BMW has sold about 87,000 Minis since its launch just over
a year ago and over 170,000 X5s since the end of 1999.
NHTSA also said 2,085 Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars built
between 1998 and May of this year would be recalled to fix a
problem with the braking system that could allow air into the
brake lines.
Rolls-Royce and Bentley are currently owned by Volkswagen
AG but BMW will take over the Rolls-Royce name and production
in January.
